Guidance & Counseling

THE Guidance Philosophy is further articulated thus:

  1. The program is a support service to the entire educational program of the Institution/College.
  2. The Guidance Program will be most effective through a team approach.

Functions and Services

The Guidance Services which are prevention and developmental in nature, are integral to the entire educational process. They are intimately connected with the curricular and co-curricular program geared towards the implementation and realization of the thrust of the institution.  The goals and objectives of the Guidance Office contribute to the student’s growing awareness and understanding of himself, his developing self-concept, his attitudes and values, his intellectual, psychological – emotional, social and moral maturity, for optimum development and achievement as a unique and a balance person.

In order to realize the objectives of the guidance program, various services are offered.  The organized guidance services form the framework within which all the activities and strategies of the whole guidance program become interrelated and interdependent.  The activities and amount of emphasis given in each of the guidance services may vary from year level to another.

The services of the Center for Guidance and Counseling services rendered include the following:

Counseling Service

Counseling is the heart of the guidance services.  It is designed to help the client understand and clarify his views of his life span so as he may take meaningful and informed choices in consonance with his essential nature and those areas where choices are available to him.

Procedures / Strategies:

  1. Individual Counseling – it is during this interview that he counselor discovers problems of students.  They are then scheduled for follow-up after initial interview. This is done so as to assist them in understanding their present milieu and helps them make necessary adjustment with themselves, their classmates, and others.
  2. Career and Vocational Counseling – it includes test interpretation and exploration of possible college and vocational courses and phases of life that they may want to consider after graduation.
  3. Group Counseling – the counselors take initiative of inviting students with similar problems.  The individual and group counseling focus on personal career, and academic concerns of its clientele.

Individual Inventory Services

Information about the individual is base on information gathered through the following data-gathering records; Personal/Information Data Sheet, Academic Performance (certificates of grades), results of Psychological Test, Follow-up reports, and other significant reports.

Procedure / Strategies:

All the information gathered are filed in the most important single record for guidance purposes, which is the CUMULATIVE FOLDER.  Those cumulative folders are then stored in safe cabinets under the care of the counselor in-charge.

Information Service

The program provides a wide range of materials and activities necessary to assist the individual in developing, planning, and deciding on his occupational, educational, and personal – social concern.

Educational Information – is a valid and useful data about all types of present and probable future educational training opportunities and requirements including curricular and co-curricular offerings, requirements for entrance and condition and problem of student life.
Social Information – is a valid and an able data about the opportunities and influences of the human being, which will help the student to understand himself better and to improve his relationship with others.

Procedures / Strategies:

  1. Educational Information
    1. third and fourth years are interviewed and are made aware of the advantages and disadvantages of their course choice.  This was done through career orientation and career counseling.
  2. Social Information
    1. Group interaction is organized wherein students could discuss in groups their ideas and thereby develop their relationship with others.

Testing and Measurement Service

This consists of administration, interpretation, and analysis of test results.  This program also tends to the preparation of evaluation questionnaire and school made achievement test for the use of students, teachers and administration.

Procedures / Strategies:

  1. Review / evaluation of testing program
  2. Preparation of testing program which includes:
    1. name of test to be administered
    2. clientele to be tested
    3. date of testing
  3. Preparation of:
    1. test booklets
    2. answer sheet
    3. testing room
    4. stopwatch
  4. Test Administration
  5. Checking of test papers
  6. Analysis of results
  7. Interpretation
  8. Dissemination (Individually or Group)

Placement or Admission Service

This program is designed for those who would want to seek admission in Emilio Aguinaldo College. It includes entrance examinations for the college department.  Entrance examinations and interviews to provide holistic information about the applicant.  The service encompasses admission in the High School Department, transferees  in the High School Department and those seeking admission to the college department.

Follow-up Service

Follow – up refers to the background check of students whether they are graduates or are still studying to assist them in decision – making and to help them qualify for job employment.

Procedures / Strategies:

The Guidance Counselors conduct a follow – up on the counselees who are still in school by interviewing them to find out about their difficulty in their adjustment.
Exit interview with the graduating students are made in order to provide the office with information that might help in the curricular offering of the school.  Addresses are updated to keep track.

Research and Evaluation

The effectiveness of any program is usually determined by the success or failure of the implementation of its objectives.  This involves the evaluation of the program, which must be a continuous process.

Procedures / Strategies:

The participants evaluate every activity conducted by the guidance center.  Different studies are conducted so as to help the faculty, administrators, and counselors in dealing with the students.  Descriptive researches are conducted such as group profiles, correlation studies, and surveys which are serve as empirical data for improvement of teaching methodologies, curriculum planning and program planning.

Systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of the student personnel service offered by the institution is to be utilized for the improvement of the service.

Enrichment Program

It is envisioned widening the coverage of the students’ education through the use of the college library and the Audio – Visual Theaters.  Thus, this program is divided into two categories: Movies and Reading.  And the main goal is to impart vision mission of EAC and its own niche to the students.

Procedures / Strategies:

  1. EP is one of the non-academic requirements in order to obtain a bachelor’s degree.  Students with incomplete EP will not be allowed to graduate.
  2. All first year students who will undergo the remediation program for English, Math and Science will coordinate with College of Liberal Arts and College of Science.
    1. List of students who will undergo the remediation will be provided the test result by the Center for Guidance and Counseling to the said colleges.
    2. Schedule of remediation classes will be prepared by the assigned college.
    3. The total number of attendance with corresponding signature will be equivalent to the total number of sessions (16 meetings). One hour once a week for the entire semester.
    4. Two meetings is equivalent to one (1) EP Booklet signature from the faculty in charge of the Center of Guidance and Counseling.
    5. The said college will submit to OSA  the summary report of attendance upon completion of remediation class duly signed by the college Dean.
  3. EP Booklet will be issued by the staff of OSA upon presentation of students’ registration form.
  4. EP Booklet will be used for 1 school year; hence students are required to secure one booklet per academic year.
  5. Upon completion of EP requirements students must secure clearance from OSA.
  6. Senior EP is divided into two parts, the Career Planning and the Job Placement under the umbrella of the Center for Guidance and Counseling.  While OSA handles the Spiritual and Social development of the graduating students.
  7. Activities credited for the EP are:
    1. Internet – based research
    2. Seminars with certificates of attendance
    3. Projects / Activities of EAC recognized organization such as cultural, academic, socio-civic activities and other similar activities

Other Services

Peer Facilitators – are trained to help the staff in the delivery of the guidance services, as well as extension services to the Emilio Aguinaldo College Community.  On the other hand practicum students are provided opportunity for the on- the- job experience in the guidance field.
The International Students of EAC (I.S. EAC) – is a student group whose members come from different countries.  Handled by the special programs counselor, the program is designed to assist foreign students adjust to college life and the country, as a whole.
