As part of the 37th foundation celebrations Emilio Aguinaldo College and Marian School of Nursing concluded an International Conference that is first of the series called the Dr. Paulo C. Campos Memorial Lectures as part of the Marianite and Emilian Nurses’ first-ever grand alumni homecoming.

The event’s theme “Building Bridges of Caring through Quality Education and Service” and was held at the 7th floor of the Tanghalang Yaman Lahi EAC Sports & Cultural Center last February 18, 2010. It featured speakers like Dr. Teresita Barcelo, President of the Philippine Nurses Association, and Hon. Ruth Padilla, Commissioner of the Professional Regulation Commission.

The event Speaker Lucille Ann Joel, APN, EdD, FAAN from Rutgers State University of New Jersey College of Nursing, United States of America, who is currently the president of the International Center for Nurse Migration, which is a joint venture between ICN and CGFNS. She tackled the importance of evidence-based practice of the nurses, defining it as an “integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture and preferences.” She emphasized on the importance of providing the best quality of service by considering the patient’s safety and by being advocates to the patient regardless of their religion or ethics as long as what the patient wants is not illegal. “A patient (on the bedside) has the right to read everything on the chart”. She also pointed that is important for nursing students to experience community-based learning, the same with the experience hospital-based learning. Issues regarding immigration were also tackled were she stated “Nurses have the right to be mobile in the global community.”
Dr. Baac concluded the conference by thanking the three (3) speakers for sharing their time and their knowledge, as well as expertise, in the field of nursing. He also mentioned that it is indeed a learning experience for the nursing faculty members and students having heard from the three (3) experts on new trends in nursing education, practice and immigration to the United States of America. At the baccalaureate level Dr. Baac made mention that our nursing faculty should start purging their questions for the midterm and final examinations to make the students responsive to questions that will enhance their critical thinking.
Based on what the speakers have said and talked about the College as an institution that offers excellent medical and other allied health courses, he believes that there are indeed a lot of things to be done by the School of Nursing as an institution that provides nursing education. In response to what the speaker stated, the College will push to have “very good curriculum, very good teachers, and very good students”. He encourages professors to “purge the AOTA and NOTA choices off the questionnaires and lead students into thinking critically”.
He encourage the audience the audience to strive for excellence and service as teachers, students, and future nurses and mentioned the need for students to incorporate on making researches, and for professors to pursue their master’s degree. “We, as an institution, should never stop striving for excellence.
