Emilian BS in Nursing Learner commended for immediate emergency response in Silang Cavite

On August 26, what began as an ordinary day in Silang, Cavite, turned into an unexpected moment of courage and service for an Emilian nursing learner.

While on the road, a 3rd-year BS in Nursing learner heard passersby talking about a woman who had been involved in a motorcycle accident. The incident happened in the direction where her mother went, prompting her to immediately check the scene.

What she saw was a woman lying on the road, visibly injured, with a fracture in her leg.

For a moment, fear and uncertainty took over.

“I am just a 3rd-year nursing student. What can I possibly do?”

She had never encountered an actual medical  emergency before. As a nursing learner, emergencies like these had mostly been practiced through return demonstrations and classroom simulations. This time, however, the situation was real—and someone needed help.

But despite her anxiety, something compelled her to step forward.

She approached the victim, introduced herself as a nursing learner, and assured her that she was there to help.

She calmly asked what had happened and assessed her condition. She checked whether she was experiencing pain elsewhere and found no other apparent injuries. Seeing the fracture in her leg, she carefully supported the area around the injury with her hand to help prevent unnecessary movement.

As concerned bystanders gathered around the scene, she remained beside the victim and urged them not to move her. She stayed with her until the ambulance arrived, offering reassurance and words of comfort while waiting for the ambulance.

It was a moment that put her nursing education into practice—not inside a classroom or during a return demonstration, but in an actual emergency where every decision mattered.

For nursing learners, learning how to respond during emergencies goes beyond memorizing procedures. It also means learning how to remain calm, provide comfort, avoid causing further harm, and respond appropriately while waiting for professional medical assistance.

Those lessons became more meaningful and impactful that day.

Andrea realized that although she was still learning, she already possessed knowledge and skills that could make a difference.

“I have learned valuable lessons from that experience,” she shared. “The passion and the urge to help those in need and to become a nurse became even stronger.”

What initially felt like an unexpected test became a defining moment in her journey.

“From then on, I told myself that I am capable even if I am still a student. I can help now as a student—what more when I become a professional nurse?”

For Andrea, the experience was also a reflection of the core values she has learned as an Emilian: 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗲, 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, and 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲.

Virtue meant choosing to do what was right despite her fear. Excellence meant putting her education and training into practice to the best of her ability. And service meant helping another person without expecting anything in return.

“Doing the right thing, always giving your best at all times, applying all of the knowledge I’ve learned at school, and giving service to the community without expecting anything in return,” she said.

The experience made her grateful for the education she received from 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗔𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲, believing that the lessons taught by her professors had prepared her to respond when someone needed help.

In the days following the accident, she did not initially think much of what she had done.

To her, it was simply helping someone in need.

She was later relieved to learn that the woman had been safely brought to the hospital and was recovering.

Then came something she never expected.

News of her actions circulated on social media, bringing recognition and praise for the simple act of stepping forward to help. While grateful for the acknowledgment, she remained humbled by the experience.

She found herself asking God:

“Ito po ba ‘yung kapalit?”

For Andrea, the answer was not about recognition or praise. She had helped because she felt it was her purpose and calling.

The accident may have lasted only moments, but its impact reached far beyond that roadside in Silang.

It strengthened her confidence, deepened her passion for nursing, and reminded her that service does not begin when one receives a professional title. Sometimes, it begins while one is still learning.

Her experience carries a message not only for aspiring healthcare professionals, but for every Emilian.

“You don’t have to be in the medical field to help”, she emphasized. “Always offer to help, especially in emergency situations.”

Not everyone will have the training of a healthcare professional, but everyone can choose to care.

A simple check-in. A reassuring word. Asking, “How are you?” Staying beside someone until help arrives. These seemingly small gestures can provide comfort and make a meaningful difference.

On August 26, one nursing learner chose to step forward despite her fear. She did not wait until she became a professional nurse to serve.

She simply saw someone in need—and answered the call.

And perhaps, in that unexpected moment, she discovered something important about the nurse she is becoming: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲.

Unlike other Filipino heroes, Aguinaldo’s life story and his place in Philippine History remain an ambiguity with multiple facets. In this musical play, we witnessed how Miong changed the course of our history by valiantly fighting to defend Philippine Independence. Miong is a story of difficult moments and all difficult moments are transitional times, people are always moving, transforming, evolving. It is also a story that celebrates courage, sacrifices and love of country.

The one hour, fifty minute musical was written almost as an allegory, shorter and plainer, although there is nothing plain with the magnificent cast led by Tim Pavino ,who gave such an enthralling, compelling performance, their voices soaring, reverberating within the walls of the theater, the meaningful message of the lyrics piercing through our hearts.

The story written by Joy Virata, a veteran theater thespian, embraced the audience with the warmth of a storyteller’s voice. This is a piece of writing that originates in a place of sincerity and significance to us. Once in a great while, an inspirational story of one of the pillars of Philippine Independence, one who fought for equality, liberty and freedom, rekindles our pride as a Filipino.

MIONG is a story of how a young person, born into a middle-class provincial family and despite external and internal conflicts, declared independence for his country and gave it its national flag and national anthem.

Recently much emphasis (through movies and theatrical presentations) has been placed,deservedly, on other Filipino  heroes, but Aguinaldo’s life story and the major role he played in Philippine history has not been fairly told or has never even been told at all.

MIONG covers only Aguinaldo’s youth. He was 29 when he declared independence in Kawit. He went on to other achievements — his declaration of the first Philippine Republic in Asia and his fight to defend Philippine independence in the Philippine-American War.

MIONG celebrates courage and love of country and illustrates how the most ordinary young person can accomplish great things.
